Lineside details
Like many others indulging in this hobby, I've always been of the opinion that a really good garden railway has to run through a proper landscape with interesting features, buildings and all those little details that you would normally find on the full size thing. It's these bits and pieces that give a railway its individual character and atmosphere, and the trick is to make it all look believeable. Believability is achieved by studying the full size prototype and how it sits with its environnment, then applying these principles to the model. Little things like lineside fencing, railway signs, telegraph poles and other bits and pieces dotted around as they would be in real life. Less is often more, and it is all too easy to 'over detail', making scenes look cluttered and unnatural. The pictures below show the most recent scenic addition to the railway, a row of terraced cottages. There's also a piccy of the new signal box at Porthcoed.
